Katherine Iscoe M.A. Katherine Iscoe is currently completing a Masters of Science in exercise physiology at York University, Toronto, ON, under the guidance of Dr. Michael Riddell (see above bio). Her current research focuses on the effects of exercise on glycemic management in persons with Type 1 diabetes. Specifically, it appears that exercise may cause episodes of delayed-onset hypoglycemia which occur more frequently during nighttime sleep. Because capillary glucose monitoring is not feasible during these hours, her research uses continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS) to document glycemic variability during these rarely supervised times. As with the first annual diabetes training camp in 2006, Iscoe will continue her research using CGMS with volunteers during this year’s camp. Iscoe is also certified as fitness specialist with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology and has completed more than 200 hours of clinical and laboratory metabolic testing. She has worked with top-class athletes including NHL draft-picks, the Canadian men’s volleyball team and the Canadian women’s hockey team. Her interest in exercise stems from her own drive to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. She is currently raising funds to run a marathon for the Canadian Diabetes Association with Team Diabetes and volunteers for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. |
