Welcome letter by Matt Corcoran

Welcome to Diabetes Training Camp, and thanks for visiting our website.

It’s a question I hear a lot: Diabetes and exercise--why is it so difficult? That’s usually followed by personal stories from friends and patients of how challenging it has been to find doctors or trainers who are well versed in the complexities of their diabetes as it relates to exercise. It may sound naive or grandiose, or both, but I think the way diabetes is treated in this country can change and, that is ultimately what motivated me to attempt to address these issues through, of all things, a camp. I first started down this path in the late 1990s in Chicago when I had the great privilege to meet many inspiring people who were challenging their diabetes head-on.  They were into running and fitness. Triathlons and mountain climbing. Whatever they aspired to, really. And, amazingly, diabetes was not about to stop them.  I was in awe, and I was hooked.  After several years of planning, Diabetes Training Camp was launched in 2006, in hopes of providing a solution to the lack of a centralized, clinical resources devoted to diabetes and exercise.

So, what should YOU expect from Diabetes Training Camp? First things first: our programs are for ALL people with diabetes--whether you are a competitive athlete or interested in general fitness, aspire to finish that grueling Ironman or simply feel energized to play a weekly tennis game.  The camps are within everyone’s reach. Which brings me to the second most-asked question: Why would the elite coaches we have on staff possibly want to work with athletic newbies?  Easy. First, we believe you deserve the best and second, our coaches simply love training people of all abilities. Yes, they have had the opportunity to work with elite athletes all over the world but many of them have told me that they enjoy this even more.  Their patience, skill and enthusiasm for working with all levels over the last two summers have demonstrated as much.  If you are interested in building your fitness routine around more strategic diabetes management or in improving your athletic pursuits with more physiologic diabetes management, we will help you meet your goals.

Will it be easy? Not necessarily. At times, as you know, fine-tuning your diabetes can be frustrating, a process of trial and error. But we guarantee that at camp you will actually have a good time nailing down the right regimen and diabetes management strategy for you.  You don’t have to go it alone!  Diabetes Training Camp brings all the necessary resources to one place. We see ourselves as your support team, standing by your side as you test your new skills and strategies.  You will learn a ton, and have fun doing it.

To be honest, I also do this because it is fun, and extremely rewarding. Our entire team feels the same way.  More than that though, we are impacting peoples’ diabetes health and overall wellness.  Diabetes Training Camp allows us to impact people in ways that we could not otherwise.  It is a different way to practice medicine.  Yes, diabetes is a chronic disease, and can be a drag.  You know that better than anyone.  But you can come to camp and have a blast, meet a tremendous group of friends, and improve your health all at the same time. And hopefully by the time you go home, it will be, at the very least, be a little less of a grind.

We look forward to meeting you and working with you.  You and your efforts have inspired this camp, and we want it to be one of the best experiences of your life.

See you at camp!
