TYPE 1 DIABETES
You know better than anyone else. Having type 1 diabetes is hard. It is challenging. It can also be rewarding, frustrating, elating, isolating, and inspiring. Unlike any other chronic condition, there is constancy to diabetes that makes what you do incredible. 24-7-365: that is what makes what you do incredible. Now, throw a little exercise or whole lot of training into the mix and see what happens. Well, you know what happens. The roller coaster ride that may ensue can be so frustrating that it even keeps people from taking on the most beneficial thing that they could do for there diabetes health.

You see, it doesn’t really matter if you have your sights set on starting a fitness program or finishing an Ironman. Whatever your goal you will be achieving the same health benefits of improving your cardiovascular fitness: your heart health. And, that is what diabetes management is all about. As much as it may seem to be about chasing numbers and “flat-lining” those glucose numbers, what you are really trying to do is to protect those blood vessels that feed your heart, your kidneys, and your brain! There is no single pill that anyone could prescribe to you that will have the same effects as developing a greater level of fitness will. Try to find a pill that will help stabilize your blood sugar, improve your cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, improve the way your blood vessels function, decrease your waist line, increase your muscle mass, improve your mood, and help you get better rest.

- As far as the numbers go, what we would like to do is provide you with a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary team of specialists that can help you think about your diabetes management in a whole new light. You want to be proactive more than reactive. You want to set yourself up to predict- to know- what is going to happen to your control when you exercise. Rather than focusing your attention on how to correct when you go high or go low, let’s talk about what was supposed to be happening in the first place and how you can set yourself up to try to replicate normal physiology. We don’t care if you use pumps or injections, meters or continuous glucose monitors, your abdomen or you thigh. What we do care about is sharing our knowledge and understanding of diabetes management strategies that will free you up to pursue all that you want to do.

Let us also help to move you beyond the glucose numbers and insulin doses as you learn from so many of our experts. You will learn how to train more efficiently and effectively. You will learn how to start up a fitness program that will lead you down a path to greater health, not frustration and/or injury. You will learn about the mind-body connection, and how you may have more control over your health and glucose control than you may have thought previously. And you will learn about fueling your exercise and training, as opposed to the numbers of carbs in that banana-nut muffin (ok, maybe we’ll talk about grams of carbs a little bit..)

You deserve to surround yourself with a team of people that can help you achieve your goals. We believe that you should be the quarterback of that team, but that you deserve a team. The team at Diabetes Training Camp was hand-picked to come together to do just that- be your team. Each member of the team is incredibly talented, but above all else, they are good people and they get it. You know how hard that can be to come by. They get it, and they look forward to helping you reach your goals.

Above all else, at Diabetes Training Camp, you will meet others that are taking on similar challenges and share similar goals. You will literally meet friends that we are sure will last a lifetime. You will be surrounded by other incredible people, like yourself, taking on the challenges of living healthfully with diabetes, and thriving with type 1 diabetes.

We look forward to seeing you at Camp!

Here is a small sampling of what you can expect from your camp experience:
  • First things first: our programs are for ALL people with diabetes--whether you are a competitive athlete or interested in general fitness, aspire to finish that grueling Ironman or simply feel energized to play a weekly tennis game.  The camps are within everyone’s reach.
  • Before you even arrive at camp we will start to get to know you, who you are, and what your goals are. You will fill out a fairly extensive personal survey and then have an intake interview with Dr. Matt before you come to camp. This will help ensure that we understand your goals and so that we can help you meet them.
  • About a month before camp you will receive a welcome packet that will include a camp schedule, a list of items to bring with you, and some information about the area that you will be coming to.
  • Camp Registration takes place in the early afternoon on Sunday, so please plan to arrive between noon and 2 PM. Our activities generally kick off at about 4 PM, but please see your camp schedule for specific details.
  • By the time registration is over, you will now realize that you are among friends that understand- your pump will be buzzing, your meter will be beeping, or you will be sucking blood from your finger and no one will even care- they won’t even stare!
  • We will kick into gear slowly on Sunday- we generally like to spend some time getting to know you in person, and going over some of the specific camp details with you. There may be a lecture, and you will most likely have a little time to take a ride or a run, or to simply introduce yourself to some of the other campers. Don’t worry, once Monday comes around you will be pretty busy.
  • Monday through Friday will be filled with lots of good times- training sessions, fitness sessions, small group learning, camp lectures, lost of good meals, and plenty of good laughs. Give it 24-48 hours and then see what happens!
  • Our coaches and trainers have had the privilege of working with elite athletes all over the world but many of them have told me that they enjoy this even more.  Their patience, skill and enthusiasm for working with all levels over the last two summers have demonstrated as much.  If you are interested in building your fitness routine around more strategic diabetes management or in improving your athletic pursuits with more physiologic diabetes management, we will help you meet your goals.
  • You should expect to go at your own pace and do what you want to do. You want to take a morning off, go right ahead. Pace yourself, and enjoy- this is about you and your goals, not what we want you to do.
  • You will have time to meet individually with different members of the staff if you like. During your intake, Matt may recommend a few people that he thinks it would be good for you to meet with to help you achieve your goals. Of course, like everything else, these meetings are all optional. You may simply want to spend your time with each other- we won’t be offended.
  • You should definitely bring your sense of humor…there will be skits!

It is an absolute privilege when you choose to share your story with us and spend a week with us at Diabetes Training Camp. We do not take that lightly. It is our hope and our goal that you have a tremendous week of learning- developing new skills, new friendships, and having a ton of fun in the process. See you at camp!
